McDonald’s To Downsize All Fries To Small In Japan Due To Shortage

If you’re worried about supply chain issues in the tech industry, there could be more pressing concerns for fast-food lovers in Japan. This week, McDonald’s announced that it will be temporarily limiting the sale of French fries in Japan to only ‘small’ portions.

The sudden change was due to a potato shortage in the country resulting from shipment delays. The restaurant chain said that floods in China, a transit point for its shipments, and the impact of the on-going pandemic were reasons behind the delay.

From December 24 to December 30, customers will only be able to purchase ‘small’ servings of fries nationwide, with the ‘medium’ and ‘large’ sizes unavailable for the time being.

“We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience to all,” said McDonald’s Japan.

According to CNN, the company said that it is currently working on “alternative measures” such as arranging potatoes to be flown in via airmail to continue serving the ‘small’ sizes of fries over this period. 

Several Japanese customers took to social media to voice their frustrations, with one user saying: “A truly disastrous end to 2021.”
