Family Moves Into Habitat For Humanity’s First 3D-Printed Home In The US

One family in Virginia received the best Christmas present they could ever ask for: the keys to their new 3D-printed home, which happens to be global housing charity Habitat for Humanity’s first 3D project in the US.

The organization told CNN it had teamed up with 3D printing firm Alquist to begin building 3D-printed homes in the nation. April Stringfield, who purchased the home through the Habitat Homebuyer Program, was able to move into the new home with her 13-year-old son just in time for the holidays.

“My son and I are so thankful. I always wanted to be a homeowner. It’s like a dream come true,” Stringfield said on a live stream. 

In order to purchase the home, Stringfield had committed hundreds of hours of sweat equity to the organization. Janet V Green, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, said: “Every Habitat affiliate in the nation and worldwide sells home to partner families who have low to moderate incomes. They must have and maintain good credit and be willing to partner with us.” 

The pair will now call the 1,200-square-foot concrete building—with three bedrooms and two baths—their forever home. Remarkably, the entire structure was built in just 12 hours, saving the typical weeks or months it takes to build a house. 

Additionally, the family was gifted a personal 3D printer so they can reprint anything they may need, including electric outlets or cabinet knobs. 

“I’m excited to make new memories in Williamsburg and especially in a house, a home,” Stringfield told WTKR.

“Some place I can call home and give my son that backyard that he can play in and also for my puppy to run around the yard.”
