Lamborghini Aspires To Continue Combustion Engines With Synthetic Fuels

Lamborghini, the luxury car brand under the Volkswagen Group, has expressed hopes to continue manufacturing combustion engines beyond the decade.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that after the company pursues hybridization, it will decide if it’s “possible to offer vehicles with an internal combustion engine beyond 2030.”

One way the automaker plans to keep the combustion engine alive in the age of eco-friendly, electric vehicles could be by turning to synthetic fuels. 

In fact, according to Automotive News Europe, its sister brand Porsche has already joined a collective exploring the viability of climate-neutral synthetic fuels generated by wind power.

Jalopnik reported that Lamborghini plans to launch its plugin hybrid lineup by 2024, leaving it with at least a decade to explore the idea of synthetic fuels before the European Union’s ban on new internal combustion vehicles goes into effect in 2035.

Furthermore, Germany has already green-lighted synthetically-fueled combustion cars for sale in the country post-2035, and the rest of Europe could follow suit.
