Casio Unveils Sustainable Watch Constructed From Castor Seeds And Corn

Casio has unveiled the PRO TREK PRW-61Y, the latest timepiece in the series of the same name—though this time, the watch has been made using sustainable bioplastics from castor seeds and corn.

According to SlashGear, apart from the different materials used to construct the product, most of the PRW-61Y’s features are similar to others in the series. 

Each watch comes with a digital compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer, and support for multi-band 6 radio reception, perfect for those who love to venture outdoors.

Shoppers can choose from three variants: the PRW-61Y-3 which comes in khaki; the PRW-61Y-1B with an all-black facade; and PRW-61-1A for a classier look with a silver dial. 

The watch’s biomass plastics, made from plants and raw materials such as castor oil and corn, is a carbon-neutral process that doesn’t add emissions to the atmosphere, even if it’s incinerated as waste down the line. 

The brand points out that the bioplastics make the timepiece more easily biodegradable than its counterparts, which are typically made of crude oil and other materials using ethylene and propylene, as per Plastics Europe. 

Additionally, in keeping with the sustainable theme, Casio will make use of recycled paper in the packaging of the PRW-61Y. 

Going forward, the firm wishes to expand the use of eco-friendly materials to other designs in hopes of building a more circular economy in the future.
