Salvador Dalí Recorded A Home Movie In 1954 And It’s As Surreal As It Sounds
If Salvador Dalí were alive today, he’d probably appreciate the brisk format of TikTok. Cuts, weird props, and unexpected twists would have been part of his brand.
The closest the Surrealist painter got to creating these short clips came in the form of a home movie he’d made on the terrace of his villa in Port Lilgat, Costa Brava, Spain. Thanks to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the world gets to enjoy it too.
The two-minute film, recently discovered by Boing Boing, pictures the 50-year-old playing with a kitten, animal skull, and rake. Dalí was pulling all these antics to amuse his friend, the one behind the lens.
The home movie was released on YouTube as part of MoMA’s home movie exhibition, Private Lives Public Spaces, in 2020. Take a gander below.
