Future Device Screens May Be Made From The World’s Toughest Material: Diamonds
Many smashed phone screens could’ve been saved from their dastardly end if they were made from a harder, more durable material than the glass that’s currently used.
That’s what the lab-grown diamond materials and semiconductor company AKHAN thought when it created the Miraj Diamond Glass, which allows for diamonds—reputed as the hardest material on the planet—to be incorporated into the screens of future electronics.
It’s said to be six times stronger, 10 times harder, and more than 800 times cooler than today’s leading glass solutions, according to the firm. Plus, it maintains the optical transmissivity of the new OLED displays, which means the battery doesn’t get drained from the device too quickly.
The diamond glass is said to combine chemically-hardened aluminosilicate, ceramic glass, and BK-7, per Input. This combination is what purportedly gives it its incredible strength and cooling properties.
And because there are multiple layers to it, it can also repel water and surface oils without requiring a separate oleophobic coating.
Currently, glass can’t be made any stronger or harder without also making it heavier, which is a no-go for smartphones and other portable devices especially. AKHAN says that glass has peaked, and it’s time to move on.
Miraj Diamond Glass can also be used in AR/VR devices as well as wearables. Recently, the firm secured US$20 million in funding to continue the development of its groundbreaking new product.
