‘Thong Masks’ Give Attendees A Little Tease At New York Fashion Week
With a pandemic embedded into our lives, Dion Lee carries his architectural, tailored styles—often served with a tinge of kink—to the face.
The Fall 2022 lineup, showcased at New York Fashion Week, features modular, multipurpose garments that can be worn as something else. Detachable pieces aside, the collection includes an all-in-one catsuit and sweatshirt with built-in face coverings that are very much in line with Lee’s love of cutouts. POPSUGAR describes them as “thong masks.”

“It looks like [they’re] sniffing underwear,” one Twitter user comments.
The overarching inspiration appears to be workwear—with utility touches like aprons, tool belts, slacks, and cargo trousers dominating the stage—though HR might have something to say about wearing a pair of briefs in the open. Lee describes that the pieces are a manifestation of his “construction brain,” having been busy with opening stores in New York and Miami.
Commenting on the incorporation of masks, the Sydney fashion designer told WWD: “I was looking at the idea of architectural façades and masks, obviously the influence of face coverings at the moment—feeling like it becomes part of your identity in a way.”
