Drivers spend so much time traveling to and from places, and some of their precious day inevitably flows out of their hands at the mercy of things like red lights and long traffic jams.
German auto manufacturer Audi’s new collaboration with Verizon is aiming to change this, introducing 5G connectivity to a select US lineup of vehicles in 2024 via Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network.
This will afford users a whole host of new features, including things like an in-car navigation system with 3D mapping, cloud-based user profiles, and better download and streaming speeds for entertainment. Software updates can also be sent over the air, just like we have on our smartphones.
Engadget notes that Audi already has a lineup of 4G-integrated cars, which offer things like information on traffic lights and low-latency road alerts. It’s likely that the 5G cars will also be including these features alongside the new ones.
Since the car will purportedly be able to react to data near-instantly thanks to the speed of connectivity, it also means that autonomous driving features can be improved by responding more efficiently to its surroundings.
“Audi drivers will be among the first in the world to experience a new generation of automobiles, one in which their car is both a 5G mobile device and a vehicle,” Tami Erwin, CEO of Verizon Business, states.
“We’re proud tobring our transformative 5G networking expertise to a visionary partner like Audi, whose premium automotive engineering deserves second-to-none 5G technology to match.”
