Volvo Begins Pilot Program To Test Wireless EV Charging In Sweden
Volvo will test a wireless electric vehicle (EV) charging system as part of a taxi pilot program with Cabonline in Gothenburg, Sweden, for the next three years.
Several of its XC40 Recharge cars, equipped with a system from Momentum Dynamics, will power up daily via charging pads embedded in the ground at two of the taxi ranks.
According to Engadget, the automaker will assist the cars with 360-degree cameras so drivers can place the vehicle in the correct spot for its batteries to be charged automatically.
As per Electrek, the vehicles can last over 12 hours on a road a day, and will travel 100,000 km (62,000 miles) annually, with the pilot acting as the first test for the cars’ durability in a commercial setting.
“Testing new charging technologies together with selected partners is a good way to evaluate alternative charging options for our future cars,” said Mats Moberg, Head of Research and Development at Volvo Cars.
