Volkswagen’s Past Rides Into The Future With The All-Electric ID.Buzz

The Microbus is back, and this time it’s electric. On Wednesday, Volkswagen officially unveiled the ID. Buzz, showing off additional color options to the retro rainbow finish it teased just a couple of days prior.

The modern-day Microbus tribute will first debut in Europe later this year with several options, including an ID. Buzz Cargo for delivery fleets. Come 2025, there’ll even be a Level 4 self-driving (mind-off driving) ID. Buzz to be tested in Hamburg as part of a shared riding program.

The US variation will make its appearance in 2023 with a feel “more stylized for the American marketplace,” Volkswagen of America’s CEO Scott Keogh assured at the unveiling, adding that it will “no doubt… be worth the wait.” The American van, scheduled to reach showrooms in 2024, will have a slightly longer wheelbase than its European cousin (shown above) and will feature three rows of seating instead of two.

The ID. Buzz boasts a driving range of about 260 miles and will be able to juice up from 5% to 80% in just 30 minutes using a DC fast charger.

Additional perks to this hunk of nostalgia on wheels include customizable ambient lighting and massaging front seats.

Inside, the ID. Buzz sports flexible seating, with adjustable armrests and extendable tables from the backrests of front seats. The consumer-friendly version will be able to stash 39.5 cubic feet of cargo space in addition to seating five people, and the Cargo version—sans rear seats—can hold offers up to 137.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
