Solar Farm Linked To Hospital Can Impressively Power The Entire Facility

The first hospital-linked solar farm in the UK has exceeded expectations by providing enough energy needed to power the entire facility, even during the winter months. 

Initially, it was thought that Brynwhilach Farm would supply the Morriston Hospital in Swansea with 20% of its annual energy consumption—but it turned out to deliver much more.

Welsh authorities discovered the site delivered enough power over a 50-hour period to cover 100% of the hospital’s energy demands, and has saved £120,000 (US$156,000) in electricity bills since it begun in November 2021.

According to The Guardian, the 10,000-panel farm was built for £5.7 million (US$7.4 million) under a scheme by the government to promote eco-alternatives and decarbonize the public sector by 2030.

Additionally, as per The Evening Standard, the solar farm has produced 30,000 kWh in surplus energy that the hospital has sold back to the grid at a profit.

“We want our energy to come from community-owned and locally run renewable energy sources in Wales. This will ensure our supply is resilient, reliable, and reasonable for both our planet and our pockets,” said Julie James, Minister for Climate Change.

“Morriston Hospital, which depends not only on the powers of its staff but also the energy-hungry machines to keep their patients alive and well, has blazed the trail,” she added.
