Neither earthquakes nor the Big Bad Wolf can get into this low-cost house—which makes it so surprising that you could have it printed and constructed in less than 24 hours.

The futuristic DIY abode, called the Sphere, has been seven years in the making for Japanese design firm Serendix Partners. A prototype was first presented in 2015, and the startup has since teamed with local and overseas partners to bring this concept to fruition.

Sphere’s 20-metric ton concrete frame keeps it resilient against the elements, and according to Serendix, the house has met Japanese earthquake and European insulation criteria too. Each unit offers 107 sq ft of space.

As a testament to Sphere’s simple fabrication process, as well as its ability to provide quick housing solutions in the event of a disaster the team 3D-printed and built it in only 23 hours and 12 minutes.

Assembly alone took just three hours, and a bulk of the construction time was spent painting the exterior.

Serendix intends to price the house just as affordably as a new budget car, SoraNews24 reports, and interested buyers could pay for one for as low as three million yen (US$25,350). To start, the firm will begin selling Spheres as camping cabins, vacation houses, and emergency shelters.
