In 2020, Apple introduced a controversial move that saw it no longer providing new chargers and earphones with every purchase of an iPhone, as part of its commitment to be carbon-neutral by 2030.

Turns out, it might have paid off big for the technology giant, with latest reports suggesting the company made over US$6.5 billion more in profit by leaving out accessories.

Furthermore, it gave Apple credibility among sustainability enthusiasts, since it would be saving huge amounts of waste from users who already have those accessories and wouldn’t need new ones.

Hypebeast reported that it’s believed the brand is saving US$35 per device by leaving out both the earphones and charger. Not having the accessories has lent to smaller iPhone boxes as well, lowering packaging costs.

As The Mac Observer noted, as users now need to buy accessories on their own should their old ones fail, Apple would have made an additional US$293 million off these one-time sales.
