Canadian Resort Overhauls As A Safe Haven For Refugees Escaping From Ukraine

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has seen untold horrors, from the attack of innocent civilians to the destruction of important cultural sites throughout the nation.

Small glimmers of hope, thankfully, have emerged from the rubble, including the communities banding together to raise funds for the country’s war efforts, and individuals doing their part to rehome refugees, like this couple from Vancouver, Canada.

Brian and Sharon Holowaychuks, who own a 15,000-square-foot resort island, have decided to convert their property into the Ukrainian Safe Haven, a refugee home for those escaping the war. 

The project, which had initially been designated as an art gallery, had its plans quickly pivoted to assist Ukrainians when the war broke out in February. Brian, whose grandparents came to Canada from Ukraine, said the efforts are close to their hearts.

Speaking to Global News, he said he felt they were in a position to make a difference and decided to “stand up and be counted.” 

To get the home ready for visiting refugees, with the goal of housing 100 individuals, the couple has since halted renovation works for the art gallery, and are restoring the resort’s original layout. 

On their Facebook page, they have documented building a small kitchen, placing new flooring, and working on broken windows to ensure the space is an inviting and homely one for Ukrainians to rest in. 

Even more heartwarming is the fact that the local community has joined in, with volunteers and supporters showing up to help with restoration or donating to the project. 

The hope is that Ukrainians fleeing missile strikes, gunfire, and upheaval will be able to enjoy the area’s calm wilderness, surrounding rainforests, and picturesque waterfront.
