Popular social networking site Pinterest has rolled out a new climate misinformation policy that will ban all false claims from the platform.
The company said this measure, which makes it the “only major digital platform to have clearly identified guidelines against false or misleading climate change information,” was to ensure Pinners can find ideas from trusted and reliable sources.
Under the ban, unverified claims, along with conspiracy theories, posts, and advertisements will be prohibited from publishing information that “harm the public’s well-being, safety, or trust.”
It describes such content as ones that deny the existence or impacts of climate change, or play down human contribution to global warming, or disputes that the phenomenon is backed by scientific evidence.
Furthermore, it will remove posts contradicting well-established scientific studies, misrepresentations of scientific data, or harmful misinformation regarding public climate safety emergencies including natural disasters and extreme weather events.
“Pinterest believes in cultivating a space that’s trusted and truthful for those using our platform. This bold move is an expansion of our broader misinformation guidelines,” said Sarah Bromma, Pinterest’s Head of Policy.
“The expanded climate misinformation policy is yet another step in Pinterest’s journey to combat misinformation and create a safe space online,” she added.
