Do you personally know a billionaire? Most people don’t, but Forbes is narrowing the gap by launching Virtual NFT Billionaires, acquainting collectors with (pretend) high-flyers.
Mirroring influential figures in the real lists published by the business magazine, these 100 fictional investors each have their own hypothetical portfolio and net worth. Making your connections in the metaverse more personal is the fact that the virtual billionaires have unique hobbies too.
The NFT avatars will be ranked daily on a special Forbes Virtual NFT Billionaires List, their value rising and falling in accordance with real-time New York Stock Exchange pricing. As such, owners (can one own a billionaire, though?) will be able to live vicariously in the opulent, high-stakes lifestyles of these high-banking cartoon characters.
Forbes says that the NFTs are for anyone who hasn’t made it on its Billionaires list but still wants to be mentioned. Luckily for them, crypto holders will have their public wallet addresses displayed next to their virtual billionaire friends.
The characters’ headshots were designed by a Barcelona-based couple comprising motion designer Goodog and graphic designer itsacat.
The Ethereum-based selection will officially launch on cryptocurrency platform FTX on April 13, following an early-access event for Forbes readers on April 12.
The publication says it wants to introduce an interactive zing to the collecting experience instead of letting things fizzle after the sale of an NFT.
“The launch of this collection is an important step as Forbes embraces Web3 and digital assets, and it provides an opportunity for our audience to better engage in this space too… We’re cementing our place in the Metaverse by launching these interactive collectibles that can be authenticated and traded on the blockchain,” shares Vadim Supitskiy, the company's Chief Technology Officer.
