The late Virgil Abloh envisioned makeup as a blank canvas for self-expression regardless of a person’s ethnicity, gender, or age—just like streetwear. Before his passing, he created a beauty line for Off-White, his fashion label, reflecting this idea of an art platform that people could mix and match to showcase their individuality.
The collection, called “Paperwork”, has arrived, after first being teased posthumously on the brand’s Fall/Winter 2022 runway. Off-White’s first foray into beauty is genderless, ageless, and buildable; according to Vogue, Abloh would liken the series to a sandbox with tools that a child could play with to bring new “shapes, patterns, structures” to life.
“Paperwork” will feature four fragrances, six face and body pigment crayons with face stencils, and six nail polishes, though the initial launch will only consist of the scents.
The crayons, which are waterproof and smudge-proof, draw from the designer’s ties with street art and tagging. Meanwhile, the nail polishes are textured—Dazed points out a “Decode” nail polish shade that shatters when dried.
The four fragrances—which are now available on the Off-White site and on the platform of exclusive third-party partner Farfetch—were crafted by the former Louis Vuitton menswear artistic director alongside perfumers Alexis Dadier, Jerome Epinette, and Sidonie Lancesseur, and embody sporty, zesty, romantic, and fresh vibes.
The selection is a “beauty toolkit that offers the freedom to customize your experience and create your own form of expression,” describes Off-White. “Endless forms of creativity.”
