Amazon Jumps Ahead To Achieve 100% Renewable Energy By 2025

Amazon has announced new plans to scale its renewable energy investments with 37 new projects globally, with the firm expecting it could hit 100% renewable power by 2025, five years ahead of its original 2030 goal.

According to the company, the new additions—which will be located in the US, Spain, France, Australia, Canada, India, Japan, and the UAE—will increase its portfolio by nearly 30%, from 12.2 GW to 15.7 GW, and bring the total to 310 clean energy initiatives spanning across 19 countries. 

The projects range from wind farms to solar farms and rooftop solar installations, in addition to the brand’s already up-and-running 134 wind and solar farms and 176 rooftop solar projects. 

Interestingly, this will further extend Amazon’s position as the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, and will generate enough clean power to power 3.9 million homes in the US annually. 

Furthermore, by using clean power, the company will be avoiding 17.3 million metric tons of carbon emissions each year, which is the equivalent of over 3.7 million cars in the country.

“Our commitment to protecting the planet and limiting Amazon’s impact on the environment has led us to become the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the world in both 2020 and 2021,” said Andy Jassy, the firm’s CEO.

“Given the growth of our business, and our mission to run 100% of Amazon’s operations on renewable energy, we aren’t slowing our renewable investments down,” he added.
