Dior has teamed up with Parley for the Oceans, a sustainable brand that previously partnered with Adidas to make recycled-ocean-plastic sneakers, for a stylish men’s beachwear collection just in time for the start of summer.
Using the principles of ‘AIR’—Avoid, Intercept, Redesign—both companies combined their expertise in high fashion and sustainable fabrics to create wearable items that aren’t just chic but also champion the move towards eco-innovative, environmentally-friendly fashion.
According to Parley, the recycled ocean materials used to construct the items were sourced from plastic debris and fishing gear along the coastlines of remote islands, including the Maldives, the Dominican Republic, and Sri Lanka.
Talented artisans at Dior then had to work around the challenge of using the upcycled material as an alternative to the usual polyester, innovating strategies on how to rework ocean plastic into high-quality fabrics via couture material production methods, and into pieces of clothing the brands says are “wearable symbols of change.”
All of the products in the collection will also go towards supporting Parley’s X10 impact program, which will see the firm intercept 10 times the equivalent of each item’s carbon and plastic footprint from nature and ensure the use of new, virgin plastic is avoided.
“With the latest science highlighting the dire urgency of action, we need transformations change in every sector of society to end the rapidly unfolding impacts on both humans and nature and protect our future on this magical blue planet,” said Cyrill Putsch, Founder of Parley.
“Creating this first collection with Dior is a call for the fashion industry to revolutionize its production methods,” he added.
