Germany Unveils Plans For Its First Climate-Neutral Event Arena In Munich
Architecture firm Populous has made a name for itself in the industry as a “stadium expert,” having been the brains behind Milan’s ‘Cathedral’ soccer arena, and MGM Sphere London that’s slated to host the largest LED screen in the world.
Now, its designers are focused on a new mission: creating the first climate-neutral event arena in Munich, Germany.
According to the press statement, the multi-use concert and convention center is slated to accommodate up to 20,000 attendees, with Populous’ winning design having been selected after multiple rounds of competition.
Inspired by Bavarian heritage, the unique stadium facade takes its cue from the lozenge shape seen on the state flag, “instantly and clearly” associating the arena with the south of Germany and its culture.
Inside, the stadium’s interior design caters to the ever-changing technology, production, and stage management needs of artists, resulting in a conducive environment where performers from all walks of life can provide “incomparable concert and live experiences.”
For example, the arena’s horseshoe-shaped seating tapped on the expertise of acoustic specialists who merged steeply raked seating and state-of-the-art technology to create an immersive symphony hall experience with sound quality befitting of world-class live concerts.
Sustainability-wise, the event arena will make use of lifecycle-based planning to drive down its carbon footprint during both the construction and management of the space. Not only will it use power generated by thousands of solar panels, it will rely on geothermal energy and district heating to conserve energy on site.
“The design for MUCcc Arena places people at its heart, delivering a unique and immersive visitor experience, as well as showcasing the very latest in sustainable design methods,” explained Declan Sharkey, Lead Architect for the project.
“The project will create a new cultural center for Munich and the wider Bavarian region to rival the best live entertainment venues in the world,” he added.
