Denmark Encourages Passing Recycled Bikes On To Refugees From Ukraine

The Danish Cyclists’ Federation and the Ministry of Transport have come together to launch an initiative aimed at donating used bicycles to refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The ‘Give a bicycle’ drive is backed by a website that will help facilitate the easy exchange of used bikes, and pair those willing to donate with Ukrainians who require a mode of transport while seeking refuge in Denmark.

Along with allowing refugees to travel more freely throughout the nation, the federation believes that, by equipping them with bicycles, it will be a quick way for them to feel more at home within the local community. 

To ensure more bicycles reach the hands of refugees, the initiative is appealing to local “bicycle intermediaries” to help match donated bikes with new owners who need them most. 

“As cyclists, we know how the bicycle provides freedom to get around. I hope that many of our members and other volunteers have the desire and opportunity to help people who have had to leave everything to get a good start to their stay in Denmark,” said Jens Peter Hansen, Chairman of the Danish Cyclists’ Federation.

“It’s powerful to experience the openness of people around the country when it comes to welcoming Ukrainians. Denmark is a cycling country and that’s why this initiative to help get people cycling is important. It will give many of the newly arrived freedom of movement and ensure their participation in important communities,” he added.
