DeLorean Previews All-Electric Version Of ‘Back To The Future’ Car

We’re heading back to the future with a cult-classic car that has been redesigned with a futuristic spin. DeLorean has showcased renders of the Alpha5 EV, which features the much-loved flux capacitator’s gull wings but with an electric engine that hopes to place itself amongst the likes of Tesla.  

The car was first previewed to the public with a 15-second video on Twitter that was released before the Super Bowl. All that was shown was a silhouette and the doors of the car opening like a bird in flight, but that was all that was needed for fans to immediately recognize the car.

A full showing of the vehicle is set for later this summer during the Monterey Bay Car Week and manufacturing is set for 2024. 

The current DeLorean Motor Company was set up in 1995 and based in Texas after the rights had been bought by a DeLorean restorer. The Alpha5, designed by Italdesign, aims to play on the heartstrings of movie buffs while using the DeLorean’s already iconic modeling as a launchpad for its success.  

With a driving distance of 310 miles and the ability to reach a speed of 60 mph in three seconds, the Alpha5 is more than just nostalgic memorabilia that only car collectors and Back to the Future fans may enjoy, but it also aims to be a supercar.

At the upcoming Electrify Expo, CEO Joost de Vries is expected to clarify the company’s intentions and the direction it is going to take in the future.
