These Are America’s Top Cities In Art In 2022

The US is the world’s art powerhouse, as affirmed in a new report by financial services firm UBS, Arts Economics, the Art Basel, and art economist Clare McAndrew.

In the latest edition of their annual report on the international art industry, the researchers reveal that nearly half of all art sales in 2021—accounting for a steep US$28 billion—came from the US alone.

It’s only fitting for the American art market to be dived into, so McAndrew created another report centered on the nation’s artistic influence. The study names the five leading American cities in art, according to where art institutions are concentrated and exhibition history. Here they are:

1. New York

2. Los Angeles

3. San Francisco

4. Chicago

5. Miami

The leading capital in art, New York, has the largest proportion of art institutions nationwide, with 26% calling the city their home. Further, 36% of art exhibitions from 2017 through 2021 in the US were situated in NYC.

Unfortunately, the report also reveals that gender parity remains a challenge in these five cities, with women only filling in 30% to 45% of roles in cultural centers that were analyzed.
