In The 2030 Forecast, a joint project by Swedish climate technology firms Doconomy and Kayrros, passersby on the street can now tune into digital outdoor displays that show a real-time snapshot of the country’s carbon emissions.
Having launched on World Environment Day, on June 5, the campaign spotlights the national energy, industry, road transportation, and domestic aviation emissions on the streets of Stockholm for the first time ever, allowing residents to keep track of what’s actually happening behind the scenes.
To create the displays, Doconomy tapped on Kayrros—a firm at analyzes satellite data to track environmental metrics—and the European Space Agency and France’s National Centre for Space Studies to extract accurate, actionable signals that can be then relayed to the public.
The initiative will track Sweden’s progress as it heads towards its 2030 climate targets, believing the increased transparency will not only raise awareness of the problem we’re facing with climate change but also promote a sense of collective responsibility to reduce our own share of the overall carbon footprint.
“The public deserves to be aware of our actual progress in achieving the emissions reduction goals. It’s the first step in taking action and making the connection between an individual’s carbon footprint and the environmental impact of industrial emissions,” explained Johan Pihl, Chief Innovation Officer at Doconomy.
“At first, the national emissions numbers might be difficult to put into direct context, but we are confident they will become familiar and relevant over time, it is the beginning of a learning curve long overdue,” he added.
