Alessi Lays Out New Take On Cutlery, As Interpreted By The Late Virgil Abloh
Virgil Abloh’s London-based design studio, Alaska Alaska, has collaborated with famed Italian houseware design company Alessi to present a reimagining of the box standard everyday cutlery.
Titled ‘Occasional Objects’, the 4-piece collection consists of a spoon, fork, knife—complete with a carabiner to fasten them together—all cast in 18/10 stainless steel.
“Going back to archetypal forms, the result we have reached is probably closer to the very first tools that humans used to cut and eat,” Alberto Alessi described in the company’s 100-001 newspaper. “It was like forgetting 200 years of design history in cutlery.”
Camping and utility tools were cited as inspirations for the collection. The spoon has a squared-off top and the prongs of the fork are split into two. The handles of each utensil are holed in geometric shapes, designed to “present a new way of setting the table, or as a means of attaching these utensils to the body.”

Only 999 sets will be made for the collection. Later this year Alessi also intends to add more to the collection including ceramics and tableware.
The project is in tandem with Alessi celebrating its hundredth anniversary, and is the first project of the brand’s new century.
