Well-Traveled Watch That Just Explored Space Lands On Earth For Auction
You would never think a watch could perform any sort of astronomical feat. However, on a space mission to the International Space Station, four astronauts were accompanied by four watches on a journey into the unknown.
The Astronomia Tourbillon Bucherer BLUE by Jacob & Co. made its voyage into space in April and spent two weeks aboard the AX-1. It joined the Rakia Mission crew, traveling over seven million miles. Crew member Eytan Stibbe, an impact investor, and philanthropist had the pleasure of holding onto the watch as it was stationed.
The watch is also just as impressive as the expedition it embarked on. The timepiece features a rotation of four dials looping in constant motion, one of which is a triple-axis tourbillon that promotes accuracy. There is also a time display. Another of the dials is a little blue planet that represents our own blue planet, and the last is a Jacob Cut spherical diamond representing the moon as an homage to its passage through space.
Now that it has touched back down on Earth, the watch will first go on tour at different exhibitions around New York City before it heads to auction house Sotheby’s for sale. Bidding is set to start at just US$1, and the proceeds will be donated to charity. However, the final details for the auction are still being worked out.
