While women typically enjoy myriad options when it comes to fashion, there’s one segment of the industry that doesn’t usually cater to their needs: the sneaker aisle.
To right this, Under Armour decided to develop a running shoe specifically designed for female athletes, with an all-women design team dreaming up the perfect sneaker from scratch.
The team sourced data and consumer insights from women who participated in a series of prototypes, including 3D scans of the anatomy, eventually coming up with a design that focused on the key areas of the heel, arch, and midfoot.
Aside from studying female athletes’ biomechanics, feet shapes, and proportions, the designers took time to understand how women interacted with the shoe, and how the shoe could be better tailored with UA Flow technology to fit how a woman’s heel blends into the arch and forefront of the foot.
With the extra heel and arch support, the team addressed one of the largest differences between women’s and men’s feet, allowing for a more comfortable run without being too heavy.
“The Synchronicity had HER in mind from Day 1. I think any woman would appreciate knowing that we had them in mind from the get go and really took advantage of the latest technology in creating the shoe that they need and providing them with this kind of perfect fit,” said Helen Woo, Senior Director of Biomechanics.
UA Women’s Flow Synchronicity is available here for US$140.
