Michigan Approves Modernized, Digital Plates That Allow You To Track Your Car

Michigan has become the third state to allow digital license plates after California and Arizona approved the notion in 2019. These digital plates have a host of features besides displaying the license number. 

Reviver, the company behind these electronic license plates, offers two versions: a battery-powered plate and a wired one that includes GPS tracking. Named the RPlate, it has an HD display and LTE connectivity. Owners can display personalized messages below their license number and choose between a dark and light theme.

An associated app is provided with the digital plates and offers different ways to manage and control their cars. Drivers can monitor their car's mileage and renew registration right from the app. For the plates that come with a GPS, owners can track their stolen vehicles and get alerts sent to an associated app on their smartphones to notify them of suspicious activity.

A ‘Valet Parking’ mode is also available, where users can keep an eye on their car after being handed to the valet. And if you’re worried about the state of your car when you lend it to your friends or employees, the license plate can help you detect if the car is being used beyond what is agreed.

Safety alerts such as the Amber Alert can also be displayed on the license plate to spread important information to other drivers on the roads.  

Reviver is offering a monthly subscription of US$20 to US$25. The company hopes to eventually go statewide with its digital license plates.
