Taco Bell Opens Futuristic Restaurant That ‘Teleports’ Meals From Up Above

This is a Taco Bell that won’t ring a bell. The new Taco Bell Defy is a first-of-its-kind “restaurant”—if you can even call it that—to not have a dining area. Instead, it’s all about making fast food, well, faster.
Taco Bell Defy opened on June 7 and is situated at Brooklyn Park in Minnesota. Right away, you’ll be transported into the future as the two-story establishment appears to float on pillars, which are, in fact, drive-thru lanes.

It’s a new architectural concept for Taco Bell, and that means new standard operating procedures too. Orders are prepared in the kitchen on the upper floor, which sends the food down via a vertical lift.
The tube then opens to deliver the food to drivers.

And about that—in place of tables, there are four drive-thru lanes, because this is a drive-thru-only restaurant. Each zone serves a specific purpose: one is for customers who order from the Taco Bell app, one is dedicated to delivery personnel, and the other two are more traditional drive-thru lanes.

Perhaps the most promising feature of this outfit, however, is the time it’ll take to receive your order. While the average Taco Bell serves meals in about 4.5 minutes, the multiple drive-thru lanes and food chute technology at Taco Bell Defy enable it to send out orders in two minutes or less.
