Tupac Dreamed Of Opening A Café. Now, It’s Coming To Life In A Popup In LA
Tupac Shakur’s name lives on, as a popup restaurant following in the footsteps of a café he had planned to open has set up in Los Angeles.
Powamekka Café, named by the rap legend himself, is opening its doors for two weeks starting June 16. Its essence keeps faithful to scribblings in his notebook about the eatery, from recipes and menu items to restaurant styles—all catalogued and penned by the late rapper who never got to see the restaurant be brought to life.
The menu is an homage to 2pac and his love for soul and Creole food. The rapper had outlined the menu in his notebook citing that he wanted gumbo, fried chicken wings, and meatloaf with a sprinkling of the best sandwiches ever to be created. The food served at the restaurant will be in conjunction with Fixins Soul Kitchen, a soul-food restaurant based in California, with the Shakur Estate organizing the event.
The restaurant will not only dish out delicious food but also serve up a helping of nostalgia as the Wake Me When I’m Free exhibit will be on display showcasing memorabilia of Shakur’s career and life. The notebook that once held only the thoughts of the restaurant's conception before being realized will also be on display.
LA will be the second state to host Powamekka after New York in 2017, where rapper Nas and restauranter John Seymour used their joint restaurant Sweet Chick to house Tupac’s unfulfilled dreams of opening his own restaurant. Now fans can go and fill up on soul food and spirit as they spend some time in Tupac’s café.
