Google Will Now Show Your Carbon Footprint Across Workspace

Arriving in early 2023, Google will commence its ‘Carbon Footprint for Google Workspace’, in addition to a ‘Carbon Footprint for Google Cloud’ tool. The calculator will quantify the usage of Google’s suite of workplace services including Gmail, Drive, and Meet.  

Greenhouse gas emissions linked to these services will be present for you to see, allowing you to make corrections to your daily usage.

Everything you type using any of Google’s services, in fact, is stored in a server for future recall using energy that powers Google’s services.

The calculator will thus show users how much energy they are personally using up. The tool was announced ahead of the Google Sustainability Summit and was proclaimed as a way for individual companies to keep track of their emissions.  

Once companies are up to speed with their emissions data, they can also opt for low-carbon locations, such as servers powered by renewable energy, to store their data instead. In 2020, Google pledged to go carbon-neutral by 2030. In the meantime, it uses carbon offsets to counterbalance its fossil fuel emissions.   

Though, the real goal Google is expecting from individuals themselves is still up for debate. Besides an option for the companies to choose different servers, it was not clear how the calculator will impact users. If anything, it only further proclaims Google’s own impact on the environment and how we are all powerless against it.
