With the prevalence of plant-based meat alternatives, it’s surprising how manufacturers haven’t expanded beyond chicken, beef, and pork. Nothing is impossible, truly.

So for Halloween last year, Swedish vegan food brand Oumph! did a little R&D and rolled out a plant-based version of flesh. Assume from now on that flesh refers to human meat, because that’s apparently a thing.

The company’s new ‘Human Meat Plant-Based Burger’ was developed to closely replicate the taste of flesh and was composed of mostly soy, mushrooms, wheat protein, plant-based fats and “a mysterious spice mix.”

The killer idea intrigued creative and advertising greats so much, it scooped up a Silver Brand Experience and Activation Lion at the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity last week.

Oumph! serves up vegan meatballs, sausages, spareribs, and döner kebabs for most of the year. Luckily, none of those are inspired by man.

Last Halloween, however, it opened a food truck in Stockholm to give folks a sampler of what it’d be like to eat their own kind. The campaign was accompanied by an ominous commercial featuring a menacing butcher with some mystery meat.

The brand claims that “no humans were injured” as a result of this food innovation.

Oumph!’s co-founder Anders Linden notes that although experimenting a product a little closer to home was “a little bit scary,” it’s living proof of the possibilities of plant-based meat options, no matter how exotic.

“This is our ultimate and weird way of showing that it’s possible to create any type of food by using just plants," says Linden.
