Sotheby’s Is Auctioning Off A Full Dinosaur Skeleton For $8M
A frighteningly rare specimen of dinosaur remains will be for sale at Sotheby’s on July 28 as part of its natural history auction for private collectors.
The Gorgosaurus dinosaur is a cousin of the Tyrannosaurus rex that was documented to be smaller, more vicious, and quicker. It dates back 77 million years ago to the late Cretaceous period when it would have roamed Western North America. It shares similar features with the T-rex, including its distinctive short front limbs.

The fossil was discovered on the banks of the Judith River Formation in the Havre Mountains of Montana in 2018. The remains were beautifully preserved over the years by the river and were a stunning discovery by archeologists to find it still completely intact. The specimen stands at a height of 10 feet and can stretch out to almost 22 feet in length. In its prime, it could weigh up to two tons.
The skeleton of the Gorgosaurus dinosaur is estimated to be sold anywhere between US$5 and US$8 million. So if you have spare millions (and floor space) idling around, and seeks the company of a 76 million-year-old dinosaur, this is one sale that checks all your boxes.
The auction of the Gorgosaurus is the first of its kind and a rare gem of an opportunity for collectors to hunt down as all other Gorgosaurus fossils are currently being held by public museums.
The dinosaur can be visited at Sotheby’s New York from July 21 to July 28 ahead before it goes on the block.
