There’s a rise of men using nail polish, or malepolish—as it is affectionally known. British tennis player Andy Murray’s nail art is the latest addition, drawing from his childhood and his years competing at Wimbledon to celebrate this beauty trend.
Murray collaborated with Michelle Humphrey, whose clientele includes Dua Lipa and Katy Perry, to design these fresh new manicures. The line includes strawberries and cream, tennis balls, tennis nets, and Wimbledon’s iconic purple and green.
The designs were part of the American Express Fan Experience segment held during Wimbledon, where Murray took some time out to get his nails done by Humphrey during the games in promotion of the nail art.
The collection is intended for everyone, promoting gender neutrality and encouraging men to express themselves through their nails.
To celebrate The Championships, @Wimbledon I tested out some nail-art by @nailsbymh and helped inspire a limited-edition range of nail art designs that capture some of my best Wimbledon memories. The surge in men sporting manicured nails is a recent trend but is one that is bound to stay as the younger generation breaks through the borders of gendered fashion and finds new and creative ways to express themselves without being held back by labels.
Murray isn’t the first male celebrity to come forward with a line of manicures. Harry Styles and A$AP Rocky are just a few other stars who are often spotted rocking them, with Styles even creating his line of nail polishes called Pleasing.
Murray carries this movement of gender nonconformity to the sports world, where gender biases can sometimes still run rampant.
