Reddit Introduces Collectible Avatars For Sale—But Don’t Call Them NFTs

The social network’s newest project, Collectible Avatars, imagines the character in numerous collectible profile pictures. The digital-artworks-slash-avatars will be created by various artists and sold for prices ranging from US$9.99 to US$99.99.
Creators from various communities, such as r/Comics, have been contacted to create the pieces for the project. In total, 87 pictorials were produced.
These avatars are being held on the Ethereum blockchain Polygon, chosen for being comparably sustainable. Those who have been invited to join the r/CollectibleAvatars subreddit by Reddit will have first dibs on the collectibles.
The avatars can be dressed up in an assortment of clothing and accessories, coupled with the standard Reddit gear. As a special feature for those who have shelled out money on the avatars, a halo will also surround their profile pictures to set them apart from other users on the platform.
The avatars are said to be stored in Reddit’s cryptocurrency wallet, Vault. Artists will also be compensated for each piece sold, including third-party sales and royalties. However, you will not need to use cryptocurrency to purchase any of these one-of-a-kind Snoo models, as cash will also be accepted.
The mascots will apparently not offer the same creative freedom as regular non-fungible tokens when it comes to licensing. In fact, the word “NFT” is avoided throughout Reddit’s announcement, even if the crypto-optional Snoos appear to function similarly. The artwork is also being sold in traditional fiat currencies, possibly in an attempt to avoid the volatile rise and fall of cryptocurrency.
Whatever the case is, collectible avatars are creating a real community and highlighting different artists in the Reddit sphere, enabling them to gain recognition and some money.
