Airbag Helmet Protects Your Head For Peace Of Mind While Biking
The importance of head protection cannot be overstated. After all, head injuries account for half of fatal bicycle injuries, and although regular helmets definitely keep you safe, a report on bicycle safety by insurance firm Folksam recently called for absorption efficiency to be improved, to better protect riders traveling at speeds over 12 mph.
Autoliv, a leader in automotive safety systems, has joined forces with POC, which produces snow sports and cycling protection, to make biking even safer: by integrating helmets with an airbag just for your head.
In addition to forming part of the helmet itself, what this airbag does is function as the initial energy absorber in addition to the helmet itself.
A pre-study conducted by Autoliv found that the updated helmet significantly improved protection to cyclists’ heads and reduced head injury risk in impact tests from 80% to 30%.
“Helmets are tested and certified in a laboratory setting and can never fully address all the real-world variables of bike crashes,” explained Oscar Huss, Chief Product Officer at POC.
“Together with Autoliv, who are world-renowned and have some of the most advanced testing and research facilities in the field, we have embarked on a development journey with airbag technology, asking ourselves what could be done to excel in current test scenarios and push the envelope towards even more shock absorbing capacity,” he added.
