Nintendo Recognizes Same-Sex Marriage In Japan Even If The Law Does Not

Living in a conservative society often means that one will have to fight extremely hard for their rights. In Japanese law, gay marriage has been outlawed, and partners do not receive the same benefits that heterosexual couples do. However, in an act of defiance and kindness, Nintendo Japan has said that it will henceforth ignore the laws and provide all its employees in same-sex relationships the same benefits as its straight employees.  

As first spotted by Go Nintendo, Nintendo Japan has cited that this complies with its beliefs and the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) to treat all employees equally regardless of who they love.   

The company implemented the policy in March 2021, but it has only now come forward publicly with the details of how it will go forward with the plan.

The gaming giant has also said that previous regulations were amended to make sure harassment and comments made about people’s sexual orientation will be promptly dealt with. The new revision will also ensure that employees will not have to disclose their sexual orientation if they do not wish to.   

Japan is the only member of the G7 that does not recognize same-sex marriage. Just last month, Osaka issued a law that enforced the ban on gay marriage. However, in certain parts of the country, couples can apply for “partnership certificates” where certain rights are bestowed on same-sex couples. This includes renting apartments together and hospital visitation rights.   

Despite these certificates, Nintendo Japan upholds that even if its employees enter into common-law marriages, it will provide full benefits and recognize these couples as fully married.
