In recent years, Instagram has been steadily carving out its subscription program, while at the same time introducing new features for creators, including product tagging, pinned images, and even full-screen posts.
Now, the social media platform is launching subscribers-only posts, allowing content creators to lock posts, archived lives, and Reels behind a paywall. These posts will be marked with a purple crown badge to signal they’re exclusive.
According to Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri, this function was the most sought-after request from creators in the program, and will be followed by a new subscriber chat for influencers to better communicate with fans.
Creators can form DMs with up to 30 subscribers instead of having to chat elsewhere, with the groups automatically shutting off after 24 hours.
Tens of thousands of creators throughout the US are now eligible for the subscription program, which, as per Engadget, will see them charging fans up to US$100 a month for access to paywalled content.
CNET notes that Instagram has been trialing the model with 10 standout influencers since the start of the year, with thousands having joined since then.
“Subscriptions are a great way for creators to have a predictable income and for fans to get exclusive content from creators they love,” tweeted Mosseri.
