Hyundai Transforms 1974 Concept Car For The Future With Hydrogen Power
As far as modern vehicles have come, there’s something in the way that vintage cars look that makes them much classier. But who says you have to give up one thing for another? Hyundai’s latest (old-ish?) sports car concept challenges expectations of how powerful cars should look.
The experimental ‘N Vision 74’ electric car looks like a retro-chic car from the past, but it has the vitality of something from the future. That’s because the South Korean automaker dug up a 1974 concept dreamed up by legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, and fused it with the prowess of the Hyundai N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo.
Giugiaro’s ‘Pony Coupe’ spec car never made it to the road, and Hyundai is now giving it a chance to with a modern, high-performance remake involving hydrogen fuel.
The N Vision 74 is imagined with a special ‘hydrogen hybrid’ system that’s been in the works for seven years. Its power comes from a mix of a hydrogen fuel cell and the usual batteries, which apparently allows for better cooling.
The EV’s hydrogen fuel tank can be topped up in five minutes, while its 62.4 kWh battery pack enables 800V fast-charging. Remarkably, the N Vision 74 gives off 670 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque, bringing it up to a speed of 155 mph. On a full charge, it can run up to 373 miles.
Two motors are built into the N Vision 74’s rear wheels for better control around corners.
Another aesthetic attribute is the set of pixel headlights and taillights on the car, a feature that has been seen on Hyundai’s electric concepts of late.
While the carmaker hasn’t shared renderings of the model’s interior, it asserts that the inside also ties the past and the future with analog buttons and a digital gauge cluster.
Unfortunately, like the mythical Pony Coupe, this design remains imaginary. The closest one can get to spotting it on the road is through this fun conceptual video that pits it against another new concept sports car, the ‘RN22e’.
