Come 2023, space lovers will be able to get their hands on their very own miniature SpaceX rockets, thanks to a new multi-year partnership with Mattel.
The announcement came just days before the San Diego Comic-Con and on the 53rd anniversary of the moon landing.
This is SpaceX’s first joint effort with a toy company, making available scaled-down versions of its rocket lineup on the shelves of all major retailers.
Mattel looks set to launch the toy spacecrafts under its classic Matchbox series next year. Other astro-inspired collectibles are also planned to launch simultaneously via Mattel Creations, the company’s direct-to-consumer platform.
The toymaker intends to release die-cast replicas of the Starship rocket, which Elon Musk hopes to take to Mars one day. Along with Starship, the Falcon and Dragon spaceships are also slated to be immortalized as Matchbox toys.
This isn’t Mattel’s maiden voyage into space toys. Since 1960, the toy company has been producing space and NASA-related products. In fact, only a few months ago, it sent two Barbie dolls to the International Space Station to inspire girls everywhere to reach for the stars and achieve the impossible.
According to apress release, SpaceX hopes to do the same with its new toy line. “We look forward to working with Mattel to help inspire the next generation of space explorers and enthusiasts.”
