France Looks To Legalize Recycled Cooking Oil To Be Used In Vehicles

France is about to pass a bill that will allow cooking oil to be recycled for use in vehicles. Euronews reported that the €20 billion proposal was created in a bid to mitigate the high cost of living, especially with the coming winter. 

Using cooking oil in vehicles may not be a new thing, but France might be passing a law to allow regular cars to use recycled oil.  

However, don’t go pouring the oil you used to fry your food into your tank just yet. First of all, this only works for diesel cars and trucks. Secondly, the oil will need to be collected, filtered, and mixed with diesel fuel before it can be loaded up. To have an automobile fully handle a tank of cooking oil, modifications will have to be made to it, including the addition of an injection pump to deliver the gas. 

The move will not only save money, but ecologists also say that using it in diesel-powered vehicles will reduce the harmful effects it has on the environment. It is also claimed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by around 90%. 

According to The Connexion, the bill still has a few last rounds to pass through before being established. It was headed by the secretary of the French Green Party, PM Julien Bayou, who noted that just 10 liters (2.64 gallons) of collected cooking oil waste can be turned into nine liters (2.38 gallons) of fuel. 

As of right now, cooking oil cannot be used to replace gasoline as it is not taxed the same way regular gasoline is. However, in the town of Béthune-Bruay in the region of Pas-de-Calais, garbage trucks have been using a mix of diesel and cooking oil since 2019.
