From our phones to computers to home appliances, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa are already talking to us every day, so it seems about time that we’ll be having human-to-bot conversations with one of the largest and most-used devices we own: our cars.
To realize that vision, LG and SoundHound are working together to produce the “next generation of in-vehicle (IVI) infotainment systems” equipped with AI voice recognition.
Voice-activated controls are usually only found in high-end vehicles or special add-on features in automobiles. According to Keyvan Mohajer, CEO and president of SoundHound, both partners are hoping to make this innovative technology available to “auto manufacturers of all sizes,” per the press release.
The goal of the project is to ease the driving experience by allowing drivers to handle things such as paying for gas without ever taking their hands off the wheel. As mentioned, it can help you order food while you race to get back home after work. It can also help with parking, rolling down windows, and changing the temperature in the car.
The idea is to make driving safer as the driver can put all of their focus on the road ahead instead of being distracted by multitasking.
Both companies are drawing cues from the market, where it is anticipated that virtual assistants will become commonplace in the future. The combined venture seeks to increase road safety while also bringing a sense of ease to driving.
Currently, there is no set date of when we will be seeing this technology entering our cars, so for right now, we will just have to buckle up and wait to see what happens next.
