If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that TikTok is taking over the digital world. Already posing a serious threat to long-time players in the social media market, the application is turning its attention to incorporating games, and now, music, as part of its offerings.
First reported byInsider, the network’s parent company, ByteDance, recently filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for something called “TikTok Music,” which could be a new service allowing for users to purchase, play, share, and download tunes.
As TechCrunch points out, TikTok has become one of the premiere ways for Gen Z to discover music, with songs going viral if they catch on within among its more than one billion users. In fact, a report documented that 175 songs that trended on the application had ended up on the Billboard 100 chart.
ByteDance, which already operates a streaming service—Resso—in India, Brazil, and Indonesia, could see this as the perfect opportunity to tie in both offerings, allowing users to discover up-and-coming tracks on TikTok before heading over to the music service to give the full song a listen.
In addition, the trademark filing listed other possible features of the music service, including allowing users to livestream audio and video, comment on songs and albums, and even release potential podcast and radio broadcast content.
Will TikTok be joining the ranks of Spotify and Apple Music as one of the most popular music streaming services this decade? It’s looking likely.
