Lufthansa Pilots ‘Green Fares’ Across Airlines To Make Your Trip Carbon-Neutral

The wait for carbon-neutral flights has been a long and arduous one. With airlines getting called out for greenwashing and multiple flight tests of hydrogen-powered planes that never seemed to take off, a green future for the flight industry seemed far off. 

However, Lufthansa is anticipating the eventual takeover of zero-emission flights that it is already imposing a price on them in a pilot.

The ‘Green Fare’ is an unprecedented revised fee for flights that take into consideration CO2 compensation for the company. While it is estimated that the initial price will be a little more costly than the average amount, it is predicted that this will go down in the future as companies better adjust to new measures. 

The project was launched this week and gave airfare for flights going out of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. 

All of Lufthansa’s subsidiaries, including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines, will also be offering this same payment scheme. 

This would make Lufthansa the first aviation company to offer a separate carbon-neutral price, according to Travel Tomorrow. The zero-emission flights are a mix of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and climate change offsets. 

Part of its offset campaign is even available on flights, where passengers on Lufthansa and SWISS flights can help contribute to the green efforts using the in-flight entertainment system or by using their miles via the dedicated app. 

When booking a flight, Green Fare is displayed alongside the traditional fares (Light, Classic, Flex) as another option to choose from. The fee is applicable to Economy and Business Class and offers award miles and free re-bookings. 

Later this year, Scandinavian travel agencies will also offer Green Fare to customers booking through their partners.
