Personal ‘Transformer’ Aircraft Spreads Its Wings As It Flies

As the race for personal aircraft to take to the skies heats up, a Toronto-based automotive company has a rather interesting contender for the electric Vehicle Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) industry. 

Horizon Aircraft unveiled plans for its ‘Cavorite X5’ last year, and now it has finally created a 50% scale version of the soon-to-be flier. 

What sets the Cavorite apart from the rest is its ability for its wings to open and close midair to switch to cruising when at the right altitude. 

The plane opens its wings to perform a canard-style take-off and landing, but once up in the air it closes its wings to allow it to cruise with a low-drag system. The plane will be powered by a hybrid electric system that can recharge its batteries mid-flight. 

When the wings are spread, it reveals 16 ducted fans that will support the eVTOLs’ vertical lift-off. According to New Atlas, Horizon’s founder, Brandon Robinson, said that a big part of the design was finding a way to keep the aircraft light and durable as it was created for the purpose of flying through all sorts of environments. 

This makes the Cavorite X5 the closest thing to a traditional aircraft. Its dual flight system allows it to function as an eVTOL would in take-off and landing, but it would soar the skies like a normal plane.  

The prototype currently stands at 15 feet long, has a wing span of 22 feet, and weighs 500 pounds. A full-sized version is currently in the works by Horizon.

However, via New Atlas, the company stated that in order to bring this personal flier to market, an all-inclusive Federal Aviation Administration certificate and Series A funding will be needed. Still, the company is optimistic about its entry into the market by 2025.
