Princess Margaret’s Custom Rolls-Royce Wraith Heads Off To Auction
Chances are, most of us won’t be owning a Rolls-Royce in this lifetime. But for the select few to whom a regular vehicle from the famed automaker isn’t quite enough, how about a historically significant Wraith II, once owned by Princess Margaret?
According to the auction house, the car going under the hammer had been specially designed to the princess’ specifications when she acquired it in 1980.
Featuring a Cardinal Red Metallic paint and black Everflex roof, the vehicle still dons the royal crest mountings and blue light that was once turned on to signal a royal was onboard.
Within the bespoke cabin is deep green carpeting, black Nuala leather door cards, and a matte rosewood dashboard that no doubt depicts opulence. Under the hood, you’ll find a 6.75-litre V8 engine, with three-speed automatic transmission.
Seeing as it once belonged to the royal family, this particular Rolls-Royce has seated many a notable person, and had been used to ferry Princess Margaret’s children to her funeral service when she passed away in 2002.
Alongside the vehicle itself, the ‘3 GXM’ registration—which has been spotted on other regal cars in the past—used by the royal will be included in the sale, together with a trove of paperwork and photographs documenting the princess’ 22-years spent with the vehicle.
After Princess Margaret’s death, the car had actually been offered to Queen Elizabeth II, though it was declined due to a lack of garage space (who knew this was a problem for the monarchy?) in the Royal Mews.
The vehicle has been certified in a recent MOT test, and care has been taken to service its brakes and power steering, so its new owner can essentially drive it off the lot in mint condition.
“It is sure to take center stage in any discerning collection and attract admiring glances whenever it goes,” said Collecting Cars, with the current bid standing at £20,250 (US$24,600).
