Last week, Porscheunveiled its latest creation which was just like no other. The luxury automaker brought one of Pixar’s most famous cars, Sally Carrera, to life.
First appearing on the silver screen in 2006’s Cars, the film character had been based on the 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera—hence the last name—with eye-catching silver headlights, five-spoked wheels, and her signature ‘Sally Blue Metallic’ shade.
The life-sized ‘SallySpecial’, which features all of these iconic elements, headed to Sotheby’s over the weekend, bringing in a winning bid of US$3.6 million, which the auction house says was a record for a new Porsche going under the hammer.
Proceeds from the sale of the one-of-one creation will go towards charities Girls Inc and USA or UNHCR. The former runs a network of 76 local organizations working to equip girls with knowledge and skills to live positive lives, while the latter provides urgent care to nearly 6.2 million displaced refugees from the war in Ukraine.
“I know I speak for the whole Pixar team when I say how proud we are of not only the auction result but that the 911 Sally Special also raised awareness of the work of two incredible charities—Girls Inc and USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency,” remarks Jay Ward, Creative Director of Franchise at Pixar Animation Studios.
“The reaction has been nothing short of amazing. A really special moment. The money raised will go directly to them, providing life-changing educational programs to young girls in the US and relief for Ukrainian refugees affected by the war,” he adds.
