Oscar Mayer Ices Out Hot Dogs To Bring ‘Cold Dog’ Popsicles
Oscar Mayer is giving hot dog-eating summers the cold shoulder by reimagining its hot wieners as ice pops. The name has been right there all along—these cold hot dogs are known as ‘Cold Dogs’.
And no, the company isn’t just grabbing frozen wieners from the chiller, drizzling mustard on them, and calling it a day. It enlisted the help of Popbar, an artisanal popsicle brand known for putting gelato on a stick.
As such, eaters can rest easy that the Cold Dog has a proper gelato base, and that it’s not a tooth-shattering hunk of meat. Although, it has smokey and umami notes, just like the flavor profile of piece of sausage. A sweet touch is the drizzle of mustard-colored white chocolate on top.
That’s right. Hot hot dogs are officially not cool enough for the summer.
Oscar Mayer felt obliged to merge the summer favorites of barbecues and popsicles in real life after receiving a vote on an Instagram post from back in June declaring the idea as “genius.”
The responses were overwhelming, and it was, therefore, “a no-brainer to make this hot dog-inspired frozen pop a reality,” explains a spokesperson.
The frozen wiener treat, available at US$2 a pop, will have a very limited rollout (doggone it). It will only be sold at participating Popbar locations in Long Beach, New York City, Alpharetta-Atlanta, and New Orleans.
