Alcohol, voting, and whipped cream may not seem like they have anything in common, but they do. Thanks to a ruling in the state of New York that was passed in 2021, whipped cream has just gained an age limit for purchase.

Persons under the age of 21 are not permitted to purchase canned whipped cream without a valid ID. Yes, that’s right, whipped cream.

The innocent dessert topping is being banned not for its sugary crimes but because of a chemical within the canister that youngsters are using as laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide used to turn the liquid inside the can into its signature whipped form is being used as a narcotic known on the streets as “whippits.”

According to the US Drug Enforcement Administration, the inhalant is used to spark psychoactive effects on the mind. “Whippits” can cause brain damage and hinder the abuser’s hearing, vision, and thinking.

Another study held by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World has found that the chances of children using inhalants by the time they hit eighth grade are one in five, a worrying number that puts the seemingly silly law into perspective.

However, according to NBC, owners of small bodegas who have been against the ruling say that even though people have been pushed into supporting small businesses since the pandemic, a measure such as this does not help their cause.
