Velma Of ‘Scooby-Doo’ Is Explicitly Lesbian In New Movie

Grab a Scooby Snack and have a seat, because a new animated film has openly confirmed cannon that Velma Dinkley is gay.

Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo, released on October 4, shows the bespectacled character (voiced by Kate Micucci) going googly-eyed around costume designer Coco Diablo (Myrna Velasco).

Technically, Velma has been out of the closet for a while. Scooby-Doo executives have, in the past, confirmed fans’ suspicions. However, this is the first time her sexual identity is being portrayed onscreen.

Tony Cervone, who was the supervising producer for the live-action Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated series, revealed on Pride Month in 2020: “I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She’s gay.”

James Gunn, one of the writers for the earlier live-action movies, shared in a (now-deleted) tweet in 2020 that he had originally written Velma’s character as openly gay in 2001, “but the studio just kept watering it down [and] watering it down.” The final version of the script made no allusions to her sexuality, with the sequel even giving her a boyfriend.

Cervone said then that Velma was out of sorts during her relationship with Shaggy because she didn’t feel comfortable in it. Now, audiences know why.

In the new Trick or Trick Scooby-Doo, Velma admits to having a crush, though she doesn’t name who it is.

The signs are clear throughout the film. She gets nervous in the presence of Coco. Her glasses fog up, and she freezes when the fashion designer touches her shoulder.

LGBTQ+ allies have applauded Warner Bros’ decision to draw focus to Velma’s identity, and some people have already rushed in with neat fanart.
